About International Day of Yoga

International Day of Yoga, as designated by the UN, is a day for people to enjoy yoga regardless of age, gender, or nationality.

First proposed by Indian Prime Minister Modi, it was first taken up in December of 2014 by 177 members of the UN as a “day to spread the benefits of yoga to all”. On the day if its inception at the birthplace of yoga in India on June 21st, 2015, Prime Minister Modi himself took part along with more than 30,000 participants. Not only in such major cities such as New York, Paris, London, Beijing, and New Delhi, more than 190 countries worldwide have participated in this event, joining the effort to spread the excitement of the day celebrating the benefits of yoga across the world.

1000-People Yoga in front of Heian Jingu Shrine

In 2016, this event was held on the grounds of Osaka Castle, the preeminent
symbol of Osaka. The following year, it was thought fit to hold the event in Kyoto, with its history, deep culture, and international image, with no place more meaningful and symbolic than Heian Shrine as the location for 1000 people to take part in yoga: a place to raise consciousness about yoga and most importantly to bring people together.

Greetings from Shri T. Armstrong Changsan, the Consul General of India, Osaka-Kobe
